Young footballers from Woking and across the county are invited to take part in a six-a-side football tournament at Woking Leisure Centre on Thursday 19 February, in support of a nationwide campaign to tackle homophobia and prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in football.

The tournament, run as part of the Football Association’s ‘Football v Homophobia’ campaign, is looking for teams in the following categories to battle it out to take the football crown: Girls Under 10, Girls Under 12, Boys Under 14 and Boys Under 16.

Free to participate in, the tournament is being run by Surrey County FA, Woking Borough Council and Woking Town Football Club, following a grant from Pride Sports (the organisation that runs FvH) to roll out the campaign. Their vision is for those involved in football and the wider society to value the contributions made by all people regardless of their gender and sexuality.

Cllr David Bittleston, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Cultural and Community Development, said: "What a fantastic event that encourages the community to get together in a fun-filled atmosphere, whilst supporting equality, not only in sport but also in the wider community.

“Sport can act as a unifying force and the tournament will allow the young people involved to meet new people, have fun and put their football skills to the test, while promoting equality within football and sport in general.”

Participating players will attend workshops to raise awareness of the ‘Football v Homophobia’ campaign and how to tackle homophobia and prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people within football.

Football fans are encouraged to attend the tournament free of charge to support the players.

‘Football v Homophobia’ is a global month of celebration that takes place across the world in February and provides an opportunity for people to take a stand for equality in football.
